FRESNO, Calif.-A frantic comeback in the final minutes flipped the score line to earn the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (3-10-2 overall, 1-6-1 PacWest) its first conference victory of the season with a 3-2 decision over the Academy of Art Urban Knights (3-10-3 overall, 0-7-1 PacWest) Thursday night at Ramirez Field.
Despite not having a shot in the first twenty minutes, FPU struck first as
Taran Williams played
Lucas Ribeiro wide left, who quickly tapped it back inside to Antonio Lepe.
Lepe took his first touch back to the outside to avoid the rushing keeper at the top of the '18, before straightening up and delivering the ball to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Art U pulled even in the second half when a free-kick off of the foot of Gilly Miller worked its way into the corner of the net, trying the match at 1-1.
Connor Graham prevented Art U from taking the lead just minutes later, sliding to deflect an Urban Knights shot from point blank range, altering it off the top of the crossbar and saving a sure goal.
Hunter Shepherd did his best to keep the score line level as well, turning away a breakaway and preventing the resulting corner from going in with a big left-handed save in the bottom left corner of the goal.
Shepherd was tested just minutes later with a laser like shot from the top of the '18, but the FPU keeper made the brilliant save leaping up with a left hand to redirect the ball out of play.
Art U gained the advantage earning a penalty kick in the 73
rd minute. Gilly Miller scored his second goal of the game as Shepherd's effort couldn't keep the shot out even though he guessed right, and the Urban Knights took the 2-1 lead.
Things looked bleak momentarily for FPU over the next ten minutes until the Sunbirds found an area to attack.
The Sunbirds found their way down the left wing on a beautiful long pass from
Jacob Bear to set up
Lucas Ribeiro who delivered a cross that was altered but changed course right to the head of
Fabricio Pozas Saboya for the game's equalizer in the 86
th minute.
The energy carried to the next possession as well, with
Gabriel Monteiro racing around the right sideline to create a one-on-one with the keeper which he promptly scored to give FPU the lead.
The frantic pace continued for the final three minutes before Fresno Pacific heard the final whistle to celebrate its first conference win of the season.
FPU will carry the momentum into Saturday's 3 p.m. home match with Dominican, a team they beat in non-conference play in September.
