FPU Drops Third Straight to Open Bay Area Road Trip

BELMONT, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team was tripped up on Saturday night, falling 74-61 at the hands of Point Loma in PacWest Conference action.

QUOTABLE:
  • "We allowed a well-prepared Notre Dame de Namur team to make us passive on offense and outcompete us on defense. Credit to them for being better than us tonight. We responded with passivity for most of the first half, and by the time we found a rhythm on both sides of the ball, we had dug ourselves too big a hole to climb out of." - head coach C.J. Haydock

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: NDNU 68, FPU 65
  • Records: FPU (6-14, 4-10 PacWest), NDNU (3-19, 2-13 PacWest)
  • Location: Walter Gleason Gymnasium | Belmont, Calif.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds controlled the opening tip, but the Argos came away with the first bucket of the game by way of a Cameron Fisher jumper.
  • FPU struggled to find the stroke in the first half, connecting on just 32% of their shot attempts from the floor.
  • After trailing by seven at the break, an Aamondae Coleman and-one play brought the Blue and Orange back within a point with just under 17 minutes to play.
  • The two teams went back and forth for the next 10 minutes, but back-to-back buckets from Ajay Singh and Trevor Thompson put the Argos up four.
  • The next four minutes saw FPU fail to record a basket, but Coleman pulled up from three on a fast break to once again bring the 'Birds within three.
  • On the ensuing Argo possession, the Sunbirds forced a turnover and ended up with Coleman at the line, and answered by sinking both free throws.
  • Stephen Baity hit a triple for the Argos to push the lead back to four, but the next two Sunbird possessions saw Coleman hit two more free throws and Adrian Antunez hit a jumper to tie the game.
  • Thompson knocked down a clutch-three to beat the shot clock, putting FPU in a late hole.
  • FPU missed the tying attempt with 31 seconds to play and were forced to play the foul game down the stretch, allowing NDNU to escape with a three-point win.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Coleman ended up with a game-high 22 points, while Antunez followed with 17 of his own.
