‘Birds Hit Snag in Loss to Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team saw a three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday night, falling 87-79 to Holy Names in the Bay Area. Two nights after going for 40 points, junior Aamondae Coleman again led the way for the Sunbirds with a game-high 21 points.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: HNU 87, FPU 79
  • Records: FPU (3-5, 1-1 PacWest), HNU (3-4, 1-0 PacWest)
  • Location: Tobin Gymnasium | Oakland, Calif.
  • All-Time Series: FPU leads 18-7

QUOTABLE:
  • "This was just a sloppy, disjointed performance from us tonight. We did not have enough individual accountability on the ball, not enough toughness or togetherness on that side of the floor, and just an overall disconnected defensive effort. We did enough on offense, but we must get better on the defensive side of the ball and have urgency to be better."– head coach C.J. Haydock

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds controlled the opening tip, paving the way for Raine McKeython to knock down a jumper for the first bucket of the game.
  • Local products Nate Kendricks, Adrian Antunez and Spencer Heimerdinger scored on three straight possessions to put FPU in front 25-22, but the Hawks outscored the Sunbirds 23-14 over the final nine minutes of the first half.
  • Holy Names came out of the intermission with another 8-0 run, but the Blue and Orange were able to chip away, tying the game on a Jonathan Brown jumper with 7:24 to play.
  • HNU went up 77-75 at the 2:55 mark for the final lead change of the night before the 'Birds were forced to play the foul game down the stretch.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Antunez and McKeython joined Coleman in double-figures, combining for 38 points.
  • FPU narrowly outrebounded their hosts 26-25, but the Hawks ran away with turnover battle by a margin of 16-8.
  • The Sunbirds continue to be nearly automatic from the charity stripe, knocking down 18-of-22 on Saturday night.
  • Antunez knocked down all six of his shots from the floor while going a perfect 3-of-3 at the free throw line.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Coleman is the only Sunbird to lead the team in scoring more than once this year, and he has done so four times in the team's first eight games.
  • Fresno Pacific has won three straight for the first time since February of 2016.
