Malazarte Leads All Scorers in Loss to Seattle Pacific

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's basketball team stumbled on Saturday night, falling 78-70 to Seattle Pacific in the final game of the 2017 West Region Crossover Classic.

• "This team is big, physical and smart, and we knew they would be a challenge for us. We compounded mistakes in the first half, and we have to iron some things out. We are really close, and we are going to attempt to solidify our team identity. HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Seattle Pacific controlled the opening tip and took the first lead of the night, but Cassie Pisik answered with a three-pointer at the other end.
• The Sunbirds connected on 46% of their shots from the floor in the first half but were bested by the Falcons' 58% effort.
• FPU posted its best effort of the night in the fourth quarter, outscoring Seattle Pacific 17-11 in the final stanza.
• The Falcons led by as many as 19, but the Blue and Orange cut the deficit to seven twice in the last ten minutes.  

STATS OF THE GAME:
• Freshman guard Jessica Malazarte led all scorers with 17 points, while Cassie Pisik followed with 11 of her own.
• SPU's Cici West paced the team with 12 points as one of four Falcons in double-figures.
• Courtney Hollander recorded her first double-double of the season after hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds.
• The Sunbirds finished the night with a 33% effort from behind the arc while knocking down 19 of their 24 free throws.
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• The Sunbirds won the turnover battle in each of their first two games to start the season.
 
UP NEXT:
• Fresno Pacific returns to action on Tuesday evening, traveling south to take on NCAA Division I CSU Bakersfield. Tipoff from the Icardo Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
