FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's basketball team was upended on Monday night, falling 83-55 to #10 California Baptist at the Special Events Center.
Â
"We had several goals coming in to this game, and we did a good job for the most part. This team is so talented that they are eventually going to go on their run, and that proved costly for us tonight," head coach
Tim Beauregard said. "We have proven that we can play with anyone in the country when we play with confidence. I was proud of the way our team played, but you have to play extremely well against this team."
Â
CBU controlled Monday's opening tip and scored the first five points of the night before a second chance effort from
Viviana Vasquez broke the trend. The Lancers shot an impressive 51.7% from the floor in the first half, including connecting on 7-of-16 from behind the arc, helping them carry a 41-26 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Â
The Sunbirds improved their game in the second half, posting their best offensive stretch with 18 points in the third quarter while upping their shooting percentage by seven percent for the half. The Lancers rattled off a 13-2 run to end the game however and left Fresno with a 16-game winning streak intact.
Â
CBU claimed an advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Sunbirds by a tally of 44-29, but FPU was able to win the turnover battle for the fourth consecutive game. The Blue and Orange forced their guests to commit 28 turnovers, the most the Lancers have made in a single game this season.
Â
Individually, Cassidy Mihalko's 16 points were good enough for a game-high, while teammates Courtney Nelson and Lexy Ram followed with 13 and 10 respectively.
Megan Lee led the Sunbirds in scoring for the third straight time, recording all 12 of her points inside the paint.
Â
Fresno Pacific is set for a quick turnaround, as they head to San Francisco to battle Academy of Art on Wednesday evening. Tipoff from Kezar Pavilion is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Â
"They will play are different style than what we saw tonight, but they are very disciplined in what they do. They have a couple of really skilled players, making them a tough challenge," Beauregard said. "There is no time off. We still believe that there are some wins on our schedule, and we are going to continue to instill confidence into our team."
