Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warriors’ Second Half Goal Holds Up for 1-0 Win over FPU

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's soccer team dropped its season opener on Monday, falling 1-0 at the hands of Stanislaus State. The Warriors move to 3-0-0 after their first shutout of the year, with Mikayla Clifford's 60th minute goal serving as the difference.

Warrior forward Jade Poon crossed to teammate Gabby Squarcia, who responded by tapping the ball over to Mikayla Clifford. After the Sunbird defense broke down, Clifford fired into the back of the net to provide the only lead of the night.

"We worked hard tonight, but we never got to our game. Stanislaus is typically one of the top teams in the region, and we are closing the gap, but we still have some work to do," head coach Rob Podeyn. "This was a good measuring stick for us, and there was a lot we can take from it that can help us be better next time."

Senior goalkeeper Summer Hammond saved three shots, while Warrior counterpart Haley Crook tallied six to keep FPU off the scoreboard. The Sunbirds managed ten shots against Stanislaus State's 10, while the Warriors also claimed a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Fresno Pacific returns to action on Friday, when they are set to host Southern Oregon in the front end of the Stanislaus State Challenge. Opening whistle from Ramirez Field is set for 7:30 p.m.

"I know our best game is in us, and we will perform better next time," Podeyn said. "Southern Oregon will be well organized and have some good speed up top. We will look to play a better a game."
