Sluggish Start Dooms Sunbirds against Nanooks

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Mike Crawley delivered a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, but Fresno Pacific couldn't overcome a poor shooting night as the Sunbirds fell to Alaska Fairbanks 74-58 at the Chuck Randall Classic on Sunday.

FPU drops its fifth straight game to open the season, while Alaska moves to 4-4 on the year.

"I thought Mike really gave us a huge lift and competed really hard tonight," said head coach C.J. Haydock. "We just had some really tough stretches offensively, and a couple droughts caught up with us. We have to clean up some things and continue to develop consistency on both ends of the floor."

The Sunbirds struggled in the opening half of the game, being held to a season-low of 20 points. FPU, who fell behind 31-20 at the intermission, went on to trail by as many as 18 in the second half. The Sunbirds managed to cut the deficit to eight with just under six minutes to play after a three from Jordan Belasco, but wouldn't come any closer the rest of the way.

Crawley led the Sunbirds with his best game of the year, totaling a season best in both points (15) and rebounds (11). T.J. Viney added 11 points, Spencer Krannitz scored 10 and Rafail Eleftheriou totaled seven points and nine rebounds.

FPU was held to 38 percent shooting on the day, including a 16 percent clip from three. The Sunbirds out-scored the Nanooks 34-22 in the paint, but were out-rebounded 37-34. Alaska benefitted from 27 bench points and scored 22 points at the charity stripe.

Banglay Kaba led the Nanooks with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Nahjee Matlock added 15 points.

The Sunbirds jump into PacWest play on Thursday, Dec. 1 against Academy of Art at 7:30 p.m.
