Sunbirds Sweep Hawks in Dominant Fashion

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific swept visiting Holy Names on Wednesday night behind a double-double of 15 kills and 14 digs from Karah Mitchell. Set scores were 25-11, 25-23 and 25-21 in favor of the Sunbirds.

FPU improves to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the PacWest with the win, while HNU falls to 1-15 and 0-8 in league action.

"We had two really good days of practice and our emphasis tonight was to bring our competitive spirit and drive from practice to the match," said head coach Tracy Ainger-Schulte. "I was proud of how we set the tone early. Offensively I thought our middles did a good job of being up and available for our setters, which is a good sign for us moving forward."

Mitchell's 15 kills and 14 digs were both game highs, as the junior totaled her fifth-straight double-double. Montana Lowe had a stellar night in the middle with 14 kills on .542 hitting and added one solo block and four digs, while Carley Bock put down eight kills. Bissie DenHartog amassed a game-high 39 assists and added eight digs.

The Sunbirds finished the night hitting .280 as a team and held the Hawks to a clip of .167.

FPU dominated set one, hitting .424 in the frame, behind five kills apiece from Mitchell and Lowe. The Sunbirds carried the momentum into the next frame to take a commanding 19-9 lead and then closed out the match in the final set on an 8-4 run to finish off HNU.

The Hawks received eight kills from Ashly Goor and 12 digs from Vanessa Flores in the setback.

The Sunbirds begin their three-game Hawaii road trip next week on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against BYU-Hawaii at 10:30 p.m. PST.
