IRVINE, Calif. - Â The Fresno Pacific University men's soccer team was tripped up on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1 to Concordia in the final road game of the season. The loss drops the Sunbirds to 6-7-3 overall, including a 5-4-2 mark in PacWest Conference action.
"Unfortunately, we came out a little flat and they got into their rhythm early. We didn't handle the turf well, and there was nothing we could do to prepare," head coach
Jaime Ramirez said. "We gave away a lot of opportunities and never got in a consistent passing rhythm."
Â
The scoring started early for the Eagles, as Connor Gordon found the net just seven minutes into the afternoon. The home team carried a 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the intermission, but the second half proved to be the one with the majority of the offense.
Jacob Rodewald fired a shot to the bottom left corner in the game's 60th minute to extend the Concordia lead to 2-0, only to see Gordon follow with his second goal of the day eight minutes later.
Jorge Chedraui caught the Eagles off guard in the 72nd minute and put the Sunbirds on the board, but that would hold up as the only FPU score of the day.
Miguel Mendoza added the final goal on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute and has now connected on both of his penalty attempts this season.
The Sunbirds are set to return to action on Thursday, when they host Hawai'i Hilo in PacWest Conference play. Opening whistle from Ramirez Field is set for 5:00 p.m. Â
"Their record speaks for itself, and they will play a very physical, aggressive style. Whatever they lack in talent, they make up for in determination," Ramirez said. "I look for us to come out and play a very good game."Â
