Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sunbirds Tie Hawks Despite Season-High 30 Shots

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University men's soccer team earned a point in the PacWest Conference standings on Saturday evening after playing to a scoreless tie with Holy Names University. The Sunbirds now stand 5-6-3 for the year, including a 4-3-2 mark in league contests.

"It was one of those games where we did our homework and made the necessary adjustments, but I was surprised that we didn't finish. We had a lot of opportunities right in front of their goal, and while their keeper deserves a lot of credit, but things just didn't click," head coach Jaime Ramirez said. "It's a disappointing result because we were clearly the better team on the field."

The Sunbirds dominated almost every aspect of the game, outshooting their guests 30-5, including a 13-1 mark on frame. FPU also claimed a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks, but the Hawks missed several opportunities after 20 offside penalties.

Holy Names keeper Juan Nieves tallied a season-high 13 saves while facing 30 shots en route to his second shutout of the season. For the Birds, Matias Fernandez needed only one save to pick up the second clean sheet of the year.

The Blue and Orange are set to return to action on Thursday, when they take on California Baptist on the road. The match is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. from Riverside.

"We have played well and had relative success at CBU, and like us, they've been up and down a lot this year," Ramirez said. "We'll see which team is able to put it together for 90 minutes."
