SAN DIEGO – The Fresno Pacific University men's soccer team struggled on the road on Saturday, falling 6-2 to Point Loma in PacWest Conference action. The loss drops the Sunbirds to 4-6-2 on the year, including a 3-3-1 standing in league play.
"One call changed what would have otherwise been a very good game for both teams, and it made a huge difference," head coach
Jaime Ramirez said. "Our guys are doing the best they can, and it's discouraging and frustrating."
Nico Tagaloa put the Sea Lions on the scoreboard first with an impressive diving header just over six minutes into the game, but FPU's
Benjamin Cowdrill scored on a free kick 20 minutes later to pull the Sunbirds even. The two teams went into the locker room at half with the scoreboard reading 1-1, but the tide turned quickly after the intermission.
Less than six minutes into the second half, Fresno Pacific picked up a red card and was forced to play a man down for the duration of the afternoon. The Sea Lions took full advantage, adding five more goals before the game drew to a close.
Tagaloa tied a Point Loma record for the most goals scored in a single game with four, and his last two came within two and a half minutes of one another. After a late foul in the box, Cowdrill connected on his second penalty kick in as many games to keep the Sunbirds perfect in that category.
The Blue and Orange are set to return to action on Wednesday, when they host Academy of Art at Ramirez Field. Opening whistle is set for 5:00 p.m.
"We are not real sure what to expect next week," Ramirez said. "Anybody can beat anybody in this conference."
