Sunbirds jump back in win column with 67-61 victory over NDNU

FRESNO, Calif. – Madison Higgins delivered 18 points, five rebounds and five assists to help Fresno Pacific snap a 10-game losing streak with a 67-61 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday night.

The Sunbirds pick up their first win since December 4th and move to 6-12 overall and 2-9 in the PacWest. NDNU has now lost two straight and sit at 4-15 overall and 3-10 in league play.

"I'm really happy and very proud of the guys," said head coach Shane Rinner. "They have continued to work hard and have blocked out discouragement the past month. It's nice to get a good team win."

Gabe Solarin added 17 points for the Sunbirds and finished 3-of-5 from downtown. Bobby Barnes scored 11 points, Trevon Clayton, who leads the conference in rebounding, pulled down nine boards and freshman Oliver Herting supplied 18 minutes off the bench with six points and five rebounds.

FPU led by as many as 11 early in the second half before the Argos would get as close as two in the final minute. Free-throws by Roger Paul and Solarin sealed the victory for the Sunbirds. FPU led 30-22 at the intermission and never trailed in the game.

Jalani Davis had 14 points and Don Washington pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Argonauts. Jalen Young, who entered the game ranked third in the conference in scoring at 18 points per game, was limited to 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting.

"Trevon did a really nice job defensively on their go-to player," said Rinner. "Trevon really worked all 39 minutes he was out there and made every catch and touch tough for Jalen, who is a very nice player. The senior really stepped up for us tonight."

FPU finished the night shooting 50% from the floor, made 7-of-9 free-throws and nailed six treys. The Sunbirds dished out 17 assists as a team and only committed eight turnovers.

The Sunbirds are back in action this Saturday on the road at Dominican. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m.
