Riverside, Calif. - #15-ranked Fresno Pacific was swept on the road for the second straight match, falling 3-0 at California Baptist on Wednesday night (25-21, 25-16, 25-19).
The Sunbirds (6-4, 1-2 PacWest) posted a season-low .009 attack percentage as the Lancers (7-5, 4-0 PacWest) were victorious in front of an electric crowd of nearly 1,000 in their home opener.
"Cal Baptist came out and played really well," said head coach Kelly Winter. "They were in-system all night and were connecting on everything. They had a great crowd behind them and they came to play."
Jessie Alcorn had 10 kills to lead the Sunbirds, but was the only Sunbird hitter in double figures. Rupia Inck had a season-low seven kills and hit .087. Morghan Williams also posted a season-low of two kills as the Sunbirds struggled to get anything going offensively.
Bissie DenHartog had 23 assists and Hannah Butler added 18 digs. Lyndsie Petersen finished with six kills and 10 digs.
CBU only had one player in double figure kills, Kim McCalmont with 10, but didn't need much more behind a balanced offensive attack and a superb defense led by Malika O'Brien's nine blocks.
FPU is now 10 matches into the season and has yet to play a home match. The Sunbirds have one more road game, at Dixie State this Saturday, before coming home to face Hawaii Hilo on October 2.
"I'm hoping that a big part of this funk we're in right now is just because we're so road-weary," said Winter. "It has been a tough few weeks travel-wise and we're confident that we can get through Saturday and come home ready to turn things around for good."
