Rupia Inck had 25 kills and Fresno Pacific celebrated senior day for
Jessie Alcorn and
Callie Kloubec as the Sunbirds took down NCAA West Region #7-ranked Cal Baptist 3-1 (25-18, 27-25, 17-25, 25-20) to end the season on a five-match winning streak.
The match was a night-and-day difference from the first meeting between the two teams in Riverside earlier this season, and showcased just how far this young Sunbird team has come.
"When we played them down in Riverside we knew that wasn't us," said head coach
Kelly Winter. "They came out firing on all cylinders that night and we just had no answer. Tonight the exact opposite happened and they had no answer for Rupia. She was outstanding. At one point in the fourth set we turned to Bissie and told her to just set Rupia. They're a very good blocking team and made some good adjustments but Rupia kept her head in the game and others stepped up down the stretch as well."
Inck helped turn things around for the Sunbirds in a tightly-contested second set that saw the Sunbirds trailing 23-20 at one point. Inck would deliver four kills in the next seven points as FPU closed out the set on a 7-2 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead. With the score tied 25-25, Inck gave the Sunbirds both the lead and the set win with devastating back-to-back kills.
Then in set four with the Sunbirds trailing 15-12, Inck delivered three consecutive kills before totaling eight kills the rest of the way as FPU closed it out on 13-5 run.
FPU hit .279 as a team and got a .667 hitting night from
Lyndsie Petersen, who had eight kills, and .a 444 clip from
Morghan Williams, who finished with nine kills.
Hannah Butler led the defense with 22 digs and
Bissie DenHartog dished out 48 assists. Alcorn delivered nine kills in her final match as a Sunbird.
Kim McCalmont led the Lancers with 17 kills while Malika O'Brien added 12. CBU hit .217 as a team.
The Sunbirds expect to be loaded with talent next season as they return five starters from this year's team plus the return of All-American middle blocker
Kathleen Anderson, who redshirted this season.
"I think we learned a lot of lessons this year," said Winter. "You grow the most when you're challenged. We were challenged a lot this year but the question is: how do you come out of it? How do you respond? So the fact that we closed out the season with five straight wins, including some pretty quality wins like the one tonight, I think says a lot about where we're heading. I'm so excited for next year and can't wait for the spring. I think this group really found themselves this year and the future is looking bright."
Senior Day
Jessie Alcorn - An outside hitter out of Buchanan High School, Jessie joined the Sunbirds in 2011. In three seasons with the team she's contributed 820 kills, 393 digs, 119 blocks and 11 double-doubles.
Coach Winter says:
"Jessie has been a huge contributor to the Fresno Pacific Women's Volleyball program over the past three years. Her role on the team has changed each year, which shows her willingness to contribute in any way the team needs. As a sophomore she carried a big load as an outside hitter and was even asked toplay middle blocker at times. As a junior she became a force on the right side of the court as a main blocker and attacker. As a senior she found herself again on the left side of the court, playing six rotations and has been a crucial component of the team's success.  She is the type of player that works hard year-round and helps keep her team motivated during the offseason. Jessie has a competitive spirit and has been a self-motivator throughout her time at FPU. Jessie has a passion for cats and she expressesthat obsession as a way to motivate the team before every match. Jessie will be graduating with a degree in psychology. Her athletic ability, and her humor, will be missed."
Callie Kloubec -
A senior out of Springville, Iowa, Callie joined the Sunbird volleyball team this season after completing a stellar career with the FPU women's basketball team where she exuded leadership and tenacity on and off the court.
Coach Winter says:
"Callie has been a welcome addition to the program this season. She has been a huge contributor with her strong work ethic and overall positivity. She has been an encouraging and influential part of the team both on and off the court. Many of her teammates look up to her as a person of moral integrity and she has exemplified what the meaning of a team player really is. Even though Callie was with the program for a short time, she has grown tremendously in her skills and abilities, and will truly be missed in our program. Callie will be graduating with a degree in exercise science and a minor in coaching and will be joining the women's basketball coaching staff this season."
