#23 Fresno Pacific had late leads in sets two and three, but PacWest powerhouse #5 BYU Hawaii came from behind to earn a three-set victory on its home court and sweep the season series with the Sunbirds (25-18, 25-22, 25-22).
"There was a lot of good volleyball tonight," said head coach
Kelly Winter. "We played well, we just couldn't finish. Overall though I was pleased with the way we played tonight. I thought it was better than the last time we matched up with them and I think the future is very bright for this young group we have."
Rupia Inck had 16 kills (.341) and
Morghan Williams added 15 (.387) to lead the Sunbird attack.
Hannah Butler led the defense with 17 digs and
Lyndsie Petersen had 12.
Bissie DenHartog dished out 38 assists while
Jessie Alcorn led the team with four blocks. The Sunbirds did a good job of feeding the hot hand in the second and third sets, getting Williams 31 attack chances.
"We were passing well and did a good job of finding Morghan in transition," said Winter. "She has the ability to really be a catalyst for this team."
The Seasiders however were at the top of their game offensively, hitting .323 as a team led by Shih Ting Chen's 16 kills. Ying Chun Chen had 35 assists and was an impact player all night for a BYUH team that had just seven errors.
"Their setter is a real difference maker," said Winter. "There were many times tonight where we did a great job of getting them out of system, but their setter always made a play to get them right back in system. She was a big reason for the outcome tonight."
FPU now turns its attention to Chaminade, a team the Sunbirds swept in Fresno just a couple weeks ago. FPU and the Silverswords face off on Friday at 7 pm HST, 10 pm PST.
