Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time this season, Fresno Pacific did not disappoint as the Sunbirds got back on track by defeating Hawaii Hilo 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-20) to break out of their recent slump and snap a three-match losing streak. The Sunbirds (7-5, 2-3 PacWest) had three players hit above .400 in the victory.
"It feels so good to be home and playing in front of our crowd," said head coach Kelly Winter. "The girls looked so much more comfortable. We walked into the night with some confidence, knowing we're capable of more. We needed to just get out on the court and play our best and we ended up playing really well. We had moments and lapses where our concentration left us and we gave up points in bunches, and we know we're going to have to clean that up as the week goes on if we're going to continue to be successful."
Jessie Alcorn tallied 16 kills (.467), Rupia Inck added 15 (.483) and Morghan Williams added 10 (.444). Bissie DenHartog did a good job of distributing the ball and finding hitters, finishing with 41 assists. Hannah Butler led the defense with 17 digs.
"We went in with a gameplan and our team executed really well and a big reason was because our passing was there," said Winter. "When we pass well and serve tough, it allows us to do a lot more and it made the offense that much better tonight. Bissie did a great job, the hitters were ready to go after a great week in practice and the result was good."
Alcorn and Inck each posted season highs in attack percentage, combining for just three errors between the two. Alcorn added 10 digs as well and Lyndsie Petersen finished with 12 digs and five kills. Rebecca Waller stepped up big in set three for the Sunbirds, finishing with four kills and four blocks.
FPU hit .371 on the night and increased its attack percentage each set from .361 to .366 to .385.
Marley Strand-Nicolaisen led the Vulcans with 15 kills as UHH lost its fifth straight to fall to 5-5 overall and 0-5 in the PacWest.
The Sunbirds are back in action at home this Friday night, facing Chaminade at 7 pm. The Silverswords defeated Hawaii Hilo 3-1 last week and fell 3-1 to Academy of Art tonight.
