Sunbirds breeze past NDNU

Box Score

#23 Fresno Pacific made quick work of Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday, showing no signs of rust after nearly a two-week break from regular season play and sweeping the Argos 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-19).

"It was crucial that we executed well today," said head coach Kelly Winter. "We had a great week of practice. It's been nice to be able to focus on some specific things that we needed to do to get better. We've had the time to do that over the last couple weeks and today we implemented some of that in a game situation under a lot more pressure."

Jessie Alcorn led the way with 16 kills and a .351 attack percentage, while Rebecca Waller added nine kills on a match-high .643 hitting.

Bissie DenHartog had 31 assists and Hannah Butler added 17 digs in the win as the Sunbirds improved to 10-6, 5-4 in PacWest play. NDNU fell to 5-15, 2-9 in PacWest play.

The Sunbirds were all over the Argos from the start, building up a 10-2 lead early in set one and extending it to 17-5. From that point on the Sunbirds worked in every player from the bench.

FPU out-hit the Argos .297 to .156 and got great minutes off the bench from Alyse Arentz, Chelsea Speaks, Rachel Brown, Amy Siemens, Hailey Jennings, Toni Murphy, Callie Kloubec and Montana Lowe.

The Sunbirds now travel to Hawaii for a four-match road trip, beginning with  a rematch with #5 BYU Hawaii on Wednesday. FPU lost 3-1 to the Seasiders two weeks ago.

"We just need to clean up a few things," said Winter. "I felt like we competed well in that match but made a few crucial mistakes at crucial points. If we clean those up, I think the result is different. We are capable of executing well enough to beat them. They're a really good team and we need to be on our 'A' game."
