Sunbirds scorch Hawaii Pacific to win 18th straight

Box Score

#13 Fresno Pacific hit .343, including .481 in an explosive second set, to breeze past visiting Hawaii Pacific in straight sets on Saturday (25-20, 25-18, 25-21) . Rupia Inck had 15 kills and Karah Mitchell added 13 on .417 hitting as the Sunbirds (19-1, 11-0 PacWest) won their 18th straight.

"This was an entire team effort," said head coach Kelly Winter. "I'd say this was some of the best volleyball we've played. Our passing just made the night for us. We served really tough and kept them out of system and we were able to run everything we wanted to."

The win sets up a showdown on Tuesday night as the Sunbirds host #8 BYU-Hawaii at 7 pm. Both teams come in undefeated in PacWest play.

The Sunbirds were tested at times by a talented Sea Warriors team that had taken them to five sets back in early September, as the match featured many long rallies. But after coming back from an 18-16 deficit to take set one, the Sunbirds were all over HPU in set two going ahead 15-7 and 20-9 while hitting on all cylinders.

Mitchell was in top form for set two, finishing kills with devastating power. The Sea Warriors would battle back in set three as the teams traded points and would be all knotted up at 21, but the Sunbirds' well-balanced attack proved to be too much to handle as FPU rattled off the final four points.

Erica Adachi was at the top of her game in all facets, narrowly missing a triple double and hitting .500 on the night with eight kills. She added 25 assists and 12 digs in the win.

Kathleen Anderson kept up the Sunbirds' hot-hitting, finishing with seven kills and a .462 attack percentage. Inck hit .379 on the night and Morghan Williams added six kills. Both players had three blocks.

Emily Carroll had 20 assists and Hannah Butler led the defense with 16 digs and Kailey Allen turned in a strong performance on the back row as well with seven.

"We were able to take them out of their offense," said Winter. "You've got to give a lot of credit to our back row for handling everything and getting the ball to our setters."

The Sea Warriors fell to 13-8, 7-6 in PacWest play and were led by Haley Doerfler's eight kills on .800 hitting. HPU hit .135 on the day.

"We knew this was going to be a good test," said Winter. "This was great preparation for Tuesday. We needed a good match against a good team to warm us up. We had to play our best tonight and ended up playing very clean volleyball.

"BYU-Hawaii plays about as efficient as any team I've seen. If we play like we did tonight, it's going to be a real battle on Tuesday."

The Seasiders are ranked #8 in the NCAA and come in with a 17-match win streak, a 13-0 mark in PacWest play and have yet to drop a single set in the conference. The outcome of Tuesday night's match will in all likelihood decide the conference championship as California Baptist has two losses after being annihilated in three lopsided sets by BYU-Hawaii last week.

Tuesday night will also be senior night for three FPU players: Kailey Allen, Erica Adachi and Emily Carroll.
