FPU completes season sweep of Dominican, wins 17th straight

Fresno Pacific continued to steamroll its competition, cruising to a 3-0 victory over visiting Dominican on Friday night to win its 17th straight match and improve to 18-1, 10-0 in PacWest play.

The Sunbirds imposed their gameplan early on and wouldn't look back, completing a season sweep of the Penguins (6-14, 4-8 PacWest).

Rupia Inck led the way with 12 kills and Emily Carroll had 30 assists as the Sunbirds once again relied on a well-balanced attack with contributions coming from every player. Kathleen Anderson had eight kills, Karah Mitchell finished with seven, Morghan Williams had six and Erica Adachi and Jessie Alcorn added four apiece.

Hannah Butler led the defense with 15 digs, while Adachi added 11 to go with 10 assists for the double-double. Anderson and Williams led the blocking with three blocks apiece as FPU held the Penguins to an .031 attack percentage.

No Dominican player finished with more than five kills and no player had double-digit assists. Katy Batchelder led the Penguin defense with 11 digs.

FPU hit a sizzling .429 in set two, but overall struggled to stay consistent with its hitting efficiency, putting up marks of .108 in set one and .077 in set three.

It was the first of five matches over the next nine days for the Sunbirds, beginning with a quick turnaround for a match vs. Hawaii Pacific at 1 pm tomorrow. The Sunbirds host the Sea Warriors, a team that took them to five sets back in early September, and recently pulled off an upset California Baptist.

"The girls are ready to go," said head coach Kelly Winter. "The next 10 days is a big stretch for us, with a lot of really good teams so we're definitely ready and excited to go."

"When we played Hawaii Pacific back in September it was a really exciting match. "It was a good win for us and we had to play our best with a whole team effort. So the girls are def looking forward to playing them again."

The Sunbirds will be wearing pink jerseys as part of the "Dig Pink" campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as well.
