Dexter Young

Dexter Young is in his first season as an Assistant Coach and head Recruiting Coordinator. He joins FPU from NCAA Division 1 Chicago State, where he spent the last two seasons as the Director of Player Personnel.

Previously, Young served as an assistant varsity coach and head freshman coach at Hyde Park Academy in Chicago during the 2009-10 season. While at Hyde Park, he helped the Thunderbirds capture the Chicago Public League Red-Central title while advancing to the semifinals of the Public League Championship Tournament.

In high school he played basketball for legendary Chicago prep coach Bob Hambric at Simeon Career Academy, where he guided the Wolverines to a Public League Championship semifinal appearance and garnered Public League All-Red South honors as a sophomore while being named the top-rated point guard in the state as a junior. He moved to Fresno his senior season and starred locally for Bullard High School.

Young played his freshman year of college for former Fresno Pacific Head Coach Jim Saia at Columbia College. From there, Young went on to earn All-America honors at the junior college (Porterville Junior College), NCAA Division II (Angelo State University) and NAIA Division I (Point Park University) levels.

After college Young continued his career professionally, competing in semi-pro and professional basketball leagues throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S. from 2001-09. Young had stints in the CBA, as well as overseas in Slovakia, Austria and China.

With extensive recruiting ties to the Chicago area and the rest of the Midwest, Young will look to keep the Sunbirds nationally prominent as they begin NCAA Division II play.
