Fresno Pacific competed against some of the nation's best athletes on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific. Reigning Olympic gold medalist Bryan Clay, the "World's Greatest Athlete," was on hand to welcome 1,300 competitors from 130 different colleges and universities to Friday's meet, and he later participated in the shot put, long jump, and javelin events, but the Sunbirds did their best to take over the spotlight.
Ethan DeJongh's winning triple jump of 53' 4.5" puts him #16 in the nation at any level, including NCAA and professional athletes.
Eugene Vollmer was just as impressive, taking second among all college competitors and breaking Fiji's national record with a jump of 51' 10.5".
Josiah Ford (46' 4.75") took eighth among college participants with his best jump of the spring season.
Other highlights for the Sunbirds included a seventh place finish in a highly competitive high jump field by
Ashley Tallon (5' 1"), a big PR by
Deirdre Wyrick (57.24) in the 400 that provisionally qualified her for nationals, and a 37' 5" triple jump by
Nicole Butenschoen, tying her for 14th in the NAIA with teammate
Rachel Eng.
The Sunbirds are back at Azusa Pacific next weekend for the GSAC Championships where the men will look to defend their conference title.
